Driving home from dinner yesterday evening, my parents were talking about all these kids who were graduating from college or already working—so soon? Cousins, family friends, relatives, coworker friends, etc. My dad lamented over how old he was getting (not really) and how time passes in the blink of an eye. His college years passed in a flash and how did we kids grow up so fast? “In another blink, I’m going to be an old gray-haired man.”

It made me almost scared to blink. Where in my life would that split second take me? To my 30s, 40s, 50s? Or even me, old and wrinkly in a rocking chair like my dad had said himself.

But it doesn’t really work that way. It’s only in retrospect that time passes so rapidly. While we’re living it, it may seem like forever until actual adulthood and eons until old age. Right now, I can’t wait to start college in the fall but that means zipping through the rest of my senior year and summer. 

Hearing my parents reminisce about their golden days makes me realize that we are living ours right now. This is about as good as life gets before the real world hits. I guess here is where I weave in YOLO, but I mean the real “you only live once.” Which to me, means treasure what you have now and make the most of the present. (Not, make an ass out of yourself or do stuff that might end up killing you, making the motto quite ironic.)

Because if we managed to wring out more value in each day/week/month/year, then maybe less time would get sucked up into that black hole in our memory. Years from now we’ll look back and remember what seemed like just yesterday.

Oh, I’d definitely rather be in the TARDIS, because I can go visit anywhere and anyone in time, and go to all those places! :) And, why wouldn’t want to meet The Doctor? ;)
